Update 4: Shiny Thing Paradise

February 28th, 2005 by The Reverend Menagerie

This entry is being written on a new tool, a 2 day old laptop that I finally managed to get my grubby little hands on, and haven`t really put down. Tracks this week are from a variety of sources, but were chosen mostly for today`s pseudo-theme of a surrealistic portrait of the world in general.

Track 1 today comes from Huntington Beach, California-based Guttermouth. Mostly infamous for the rumor of being banned in Canada and the feminist anthem “Suckin’ Dick For Beer”, Guttermouth is a punk band with a great sense of humor, and part of a softer side, as shown by the track here. I give you:

Guttermouth - She’s Got The Look

Second track this week comes from longtime underground rapper Justin Warfield. In 1993, Mr Warfield released a largely ignored but talented debut album entitled “My Field Trip To Planet 9″. Produced by Prince Paul, the album was a strange mix of unpredictable beats and quasi-psychedelic imagery that was, in my opinion, better than most mainstream rappers. His second album, “The Justin Warfield Supernaut”, went totalling in an opposite direction with a classic rock vibe and utterly baffling lyrics. To my knowledge, he hasn`t released a third album, but has guested with the likes of Bomb The Bass, Chemical Brothers, Placebo, and Cornershop. Taken from his debut album, I give you:

Justin Warfield - Drugstore Cowboy

Track 3, and we have hit the twilight zone. Usually one does not find a hardcore punk cover of a rather sedate Counting Crows song on a CD picked from a dollar bin. Usually, however, one doesn`t often find hardcore punk bands covering sedate songs. There was an exception, as there usually is (case in point: “Punk Goes Pop”)… I discovered Stretch Arm Strong while doing a trawl for punk covers not done by either Me First and the Gimme Gimmies or New Found Glory. I almost posted the cover they did of Pink`s “Get The Party Started”, which was my introduction to the band, however since everyone has heard that Pink song way too goddamn much, I declined in favor of another cover, this time of a Counting Crows song. Without further ado, I give you:

Stretch Arm Strong - Angels of the Silences

Final track this week comes from one-hit-wonders Deep Blue Something. According to VH1.com, Deep Blue Something was formed by four students at the University of North Texas in Denton, northwest of Dallas. In 1995, they released their one and only radio hit, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, which is now generally relegated to “soft-rock” stations. Their second album, The self-titled “Deep Blue Something” was released in 2001 and promptly forgotten. Beyond that, they appeared on 1998`s “BASEketball” soundtrack, from which this song appears. It nearly makes up for their radio hit, so I give you:

Deep Blue Something - Tonight

Next week will be an all-remix week. Stay tuned until then.
