Update 12: Yet another long-distance dedication..

April 26th, 2005 by The Reverend Menagerie

Apologies for the lateness, I simply had no time to write after working yesterday. And once again, I find myself in a slightly lower mood while beginning the rather fun task of starting an update. So I turn to thoughts of someone very special to me, like you do, and end up feeling both grateful and slightly more alone than I had been. This week`s update is dedicated to someone who should definitely know who she is, but will not be named just because I enjoy the questions sometimes posed about the subject. Call it masochism…

Track 1 this week comes from an album I was recently given on an mp3 CD. A friend of mine had known that I like the band Air, and have since I saw “The Virgin Suicides”. In 1998 Air released an album that, well, in the words of quite a few people, “is one of the essential trinity of albums that define 90’s trip-hop”. I have no idea what that is supposed to mean, but I like it and liked the song enough to post it this week.

Air - New Star In The Sky

Track 2 is a live cut, and also beginning with the letter “A”. It`s also brought to you the number 7, and now that this Sesame Street moment has passed, I can honestly say this.

Elmo can go fuck himself. ….

Back to the track, though. I`m developing a tendency to getting sidetracked this week. I have no idea where I picked up this song, but I’ve had it on the computer for a while. Always a fan of Prince’s seminal “Purple Rain” movie/soundtrack, I was delighted when I first heard this cover of possibly the most well-known song from the disc. To find it done by indie-rock female goddess Ani Difranco didn`t hurt any, either.

Ani Difranco - When Doves Cry (Live)

The third song this week is a bit of a sorbet, to clear the palate. It`s also a slight detour into both a private joke, a bit of wishful thinking over a mentioned DVD set, and…my own strange tastes in music. The Red Elvises released an album in 1998 containing nothing but songs sung in Russian. Now that’s not that spectacular, except that this band is also something of a combination of surf-rock and techno-styling. Plus, they sang songs about cosmonauts, disco, and this song, which in english is called “I Wanna See You Bellydance”. I can`t type the Russian letters, so…

The Red Elvises - [Russian Bellydance]

Track 4 this week comes from Ben Harper, and was also included in the previously mentioned mp3 CD, except in a section of random songs. Having not really listened to much of his work, I liked this song. Probably because at first I thought it was G.Love and Special Sauce, and I am a fan of them. I`m running out of witty things to say, so here’s the song.

Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses

And finally, the meat of the dedication. Rather than give you tidbits of information that is unimportant to the feeling behind the songs, I`ll give you the songs themselves, and let you draw conclusions to what they mean, why I picked them, and who they are meant for. I will say that the person I`m dedicating this post to is a large part of my life, and without her, I`d most likely be nowhere near as coherent or sane as I am. She has helped me through a great deal, and saw just how low I went due to the person I call my personal heroin. However, that person, (the heroin), is a subject for another time.

Ray Charles & Bonnie Raitt - Do I Ever Cross Your Mind?

John Lee Hooker & Carlos Santana - Chill Out (Things Gonna Change)

Billie Holiday - I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me

I`m especially fond of that last track, taken from the best of Lady Day CD set. I recommend it, highly.

Next week, we`ll talk about whatever, and maybe I`ll explain more about the personal heroin. Until later…
